Plant Knowledge & Philosophy
Our Love for Plants
Plants are at the heart of every garden we create. They bring structure, seasonal change, atmosphere and life to outdoor spaces, shaping how a garden feels and evolves over time.
Our work is rooted in horticulture, and we approach planting with the understanding that every species has its own character, requirements and lifespan. Careful selection ensures the garden not only looks right on completion, but continues to mature and improve for many years.
Planting Beyond Availability
In much of the industry, planting is often dictated by availability rather than suitability. Designers and contractors frequently select from a limited palette of commonly stocked plants, prioritising convenience over long-term performance.
We take a different approach.
Plant selection is guided by the specific conditions of each garden, including soil, aspect, drainage and intended maintenance. We consider how plants will grow, interact and age, ensuring the planting scheme develops positively over time.
This ensures the garden remains balanced, resilient and appropriate for its setting.
Designing for Longevity and Change
All plants have a natural lifecycle. Some may provide structure for decades, while others contribute shorter-term interest and evolve over five to seven years. Understanding this allows us to design planting schemes that remain dynamic and sustainable, with layers of structure that support the garden as it matures.
We carefully combine long-term structural planting with softer, evolving layers to ensure the garden retains depth and character throughout its life.
This horticultural foresight is essential to creating gardens that endure.
A Diverse and Considered Plant Palette
There are thousands of suitable plants available to gardeners in the UK, yet only a small percentage are commonly used. Our horticultural background allows us to draw from a much broader palette, selecting plants that are appropriate, interesting and well suited to each individual project.
This creates gardens that feel distinctive and naturally balanced, rather than generic or repetitive.
Growing Plants Ourselves
Our passion for plants extends beyond design. We maintain our own small nursery, where we grow and establish selected plants for use in our projects. This allows us to provide carefully nurtured, well-adapted specimens and ensures greater control over plant quality and suitability.
Growing plants ourselves deepens our understanding of their requirements and behaviour, informing every planting decision we make.
Gardens That Mature Beautifully
A successful garden is not defined solely by how it looks when first completed, but by how it develops over time. Our horticultural knowledge ensures planting is selected and arranged with maturity in mind, allowing the garden to evolve naturally while maintaining its intended structure and character.
This approach creates gardens that are not only visually compelling, but enduring and alive.
